Director of Academic Research & Collaboration


numo is seeking a Director to lead our portfolio of activities with top academic institutions.

The successful candidate will thrive on operating between the academic and commercial worlds.

We are seeking an entrepreneurially-minded, creative thinker that is able to see commercialization potential across a broad range of academic disciplines & research projects.

The objective of the role is to ensure numo is collaborating effectively with multiple universities & academic researchers to translate cutting edge research into new fintech ventures.

Responsibilities include:

  • Point person for all numo academic activities including sponsored research projects, capstone & course projects, university entrepreneurship challenges & technical competitions, and spinoff commercialization projects
  • Responsible for existing and new university relationships to include pitching new models & ideas for collaboration between numo and a university or individual researcher
  • Manage a funnel of fintech translation ideas from introductory conversations with researchers to business case validation and term sheet creation
  • Point person for the PNC Center for Financial Services Innovation, a broad academic partnership with Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh.
  • Lead the process for evaluating academic research proposals including creating a point of view on potential for commercialization
  • Interface with university technology transfer, commercialization, sponsored research and innovation offices.
  • Collaborate closely with academic researchers from multiple disciplines including computer science (artificial intelligence, machine learning, natural language processing, etc) and business (finance, marketing, operations, business technology)
  • Work closely with numo Venture Assessment team to create commercialization business cases for promising academic research
  • Manage the operations of academic projects including the research proposal collection and vetting process, the flow of data between numo and academic research community, and assistance with in-process academic research
  • Reviews academic research papers submitted to numo for evaluation

The successful candidate will have the following qualifications:

  • Bachelors Degree in a technical or business related field
  • Masters, PhD or greater required
  • 5+ years of professional experience in the academic, private, or public sectors
  • Demonstrated success in an academic research environment
  • Passion for academic research translation and commercialization
  • Expertise in university technology transfer, commercialization, and IP licensing
  • Financial services industry experiences is a plus but not required
  • Startup experience is a plus but not required
  • Ability to manage a portfolio of projects across multiple universities
  • Able to collaborate with corporate employees at levels from junior to senior executives
