Venture Associate

As a venture associate you will explore, assess and mature new project opportunities for numo.  In this role you match unsolved business problems with emerging technologies.  Our ideal venture associate is a creative thinker and explorer that dives into details to uncover high growth opportunities.  Ultimately the venture associate creates succinct project pitches & presents them to numo senior staff for funding consideration.  Ideas are mostly sourced from industry experts inside of banking and academic researchers.  A venture associate develops expertise in current industry gaps and sees gaps that no one is talking about to shape the opportunities that we will pursue.

Responsibilities

  • Lead selection process of most promising ideas for development and pitch ideas to senior leadership
  • Gather industry information and assess market landscapes
  • Articulate thoughtful analyses into recommendations/business cases for development
  • Build relationships with bank contacts, subject matter experts, entrepreneurs and academics
  • Conduct due diligence, operational metrics assessments, competitive analysis, product and technology evaluation, reference calls, and financial and exit modeling
  • Proactively source opportunity leads from a number of sources

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree required; Business, finance, computer science or related field preferred  
  • MBA or other post graduate work preferred
  • Prior experience in VCs, startups, or consulting preferred
  • Prior experience in banking (retail, commercial banking, wealth and asset management, investment banking) or experience within other highly regulated industries required

Skills/Experiences

While there is no "ideal" profile for this role, we are looking for candidates with some combination of the following experiences / skills:

  • Ability to uncover needs / problems (both consumer and business) through consumer research, structured interactions, and discovery
  • Ability to perform analysis and form strategy related to opportunities, including: industry / competition, market sizing, pricing / cost structure, go to market, commercialization / exit potential, business planning
  • Ability to synthesize findings into cohesive, succinct messages to crisply, concisely convey complex information to high level audiences in written and verbal forms
  • Ability to "pitch" ideas and convince the organization to continue pursuing ideas
  • Ability to work independently and drive multiple dynamic projects
  • Grittiness in uncovering information (phone calls, visits, connections, etc.) – using more than just Google
  • Understanding of technologies required to stand up a digital product
  • Self-starter with technology background
  • Willingness to roll up your sleeves and tackle something hands-on
  • Entrepreneurial spirit and a focus on execution
  • Experience standing up business lines / new offerings / innovative products
  • Experience developing / launching digital products
  • Experience working on a cross-functional product / design / technical team
  • Experience in technology assessment and industry commercialization

We build innovative consumer and enterprise software in house by applying cutting edge approaches, technology, and data analysis techniques to financial service opportunities.  Through academic and corporate partnerships, we source our project ideas by understanding immediate business challenges at PNC. We work directly with staff inside the bank to build products that will create immediate value for PNC we architect products so that they can be spun off into standalone companies.
